When does my child need a tutor?

Is your child having difficulty with algebra even though previous math subjects were easily learned? Is your child having difficulty with word problems in Physics even though classroom concepts are understood? These are real situations in which a tutor can help your child. In general, your child will benefit from a tutor if any of the following are observed:
- Your child's grades rapidly decline
- Your child is in a large classroom
- Your child has an uneasy relationship with the teacher
- Your child is showing a lack of interest in a particular subject

Our professional tutors help restore your child's self-confidence, motivation, and academic performance by providing one-on-one guidance.

Where do you meet with my child?

Fox Chapel Tutoring recommends meeting in your home. Although the child's home is the ideal environment in which to learn, we also recognize that locations outside the home are more comfortable for some children. Such locations could include a public library, a church or synagogue, or a local school. The choice is yours to make. We will meet with your child at any appropriate location.

When should my child begin the SAT/ACT test preparation process?

Fox Chapel Tutoring recommends starting the planning process during the sophomore year or earlier. In addition to taking the PSAT during October of the sophomore year, many students take SAT subject tests in math and history at the conclusion of the sophomore year. These particular students have completed precalculus or AP History courses during the sophomore year and have attained the requisite content knowledge to be successful on the SAT subject test. Preparation for any SAT subject test should begin 4-6 weeks prior to the scheduled test date. Most students begin formal SAT and/or ACT test preparation during the summer months prior to the junior year. Some students also prepare for the PSAT that is given in October of the junior year. Test preparation is typically ongoing during the junior year as students decide which combination of SAT, ACT, and SAT subject test are needed for the college of their choice. Many students will continue preparation during the summer months preceding their senior year for the ACT given in September and/or the SAT test given in October.

The test preparation process is often confusing for students and parents due to the wide variety of standardized test options. Each student should develop an individualized plan that provides enough time to complete all tests by October or November of their senior year. For guidance in the planning process, please contact Fox Chapel Tutoring. For additional information on the planning process, see our new PowerPoint presentation.
